Somewhere is a plea from the young that the world will step aside and make room for them as they are. It’s a hope that even amid violence, poverty, bigotry, and racism we can at least imagine a place where there is “time together, with time to spare.” This particular version was recorded amidst COVID-19 protocols while concert halls, schools, and theaters across the globe were shut down. Leonard Bernstein’s famous quote was adjusted to become the Lyceum Philharmonic’s mantra, “This will be our reply to [the pandemic]: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.” Traditionally during this period the students would have been performing for large audiences in live venues, as it was the Philharmonic rehearsed with every student masked and six feet apart in a gym grateful just to keep making music. The orchestra stretched from one side of the gym to the other. The remarkable violin soloist, Caroline Campbell, was suddenly available with concert halls across the globe shutting down. Caroline flew in from Los Angeles and recorded with the students. Lyceum Philharmonic at American Heritage School is located in American Fork Utah (population ~ 30,000). We looked all over Utah for urban-looking filming locations to put the orchestra in a NYC environment, ironically all the filming locations in this video are within a mile or two of our campus! The whole experience was incredible and means even more because of the sacrifices that were made.
